On October 23, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Federal Republic of Nigeria hosted the first-ever screening of the film “Bucha” in West Africa.
The event was supported by the Ukrainian company WELTUM-Zaporizhzhia, which acted as the official sponsor and partner of the screening.
The event gathered representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Nigeria, government officials, media, business leaders, opinion-makers, and members of the Ukrainian community.
In his opening remarks, the Ambassador Mr. Ivan Kholostenko emphasized that in today’s world, where disinformation and manipulation have become tools of warfare, Ukraine must stand guard over the truth — and cultural diplomacy is one of the most powerful ways to share that truth with the world.
The Ambassador also underlined that Russia’s neo-imperial actions in Ukraine are not an isolated case — the same methods of manipulation, disinformation, and destabilization are being used across Africa. It is crucial to expose the true face of Russian neo-colonialism.
Speaking after the Ambassador, the newly appointed Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Lagos, Mr. Fadi Michel Issa, addressed the audience and emphasized solidarity with the people of Ukraine as well as a shared commitment to peace, justice, and the sovereignty of nations. Mr. Issa highlighted the courage and resilience of Ukrainians in their struggle for freedom and democratic values, calling on the international community — particularly Nigeria — to continue supporting efforts aimed at protecting human rights and restoring peace.
“May the courage of the Ukrainian people inspire us all,” concluded the Honorary Consul.
As part of the event, a charity fundraising was held under the initiative "Allies of Steel".
