Day of the State Coat of Arms of Ukraine
19 February 2025 12:26

33 years ago, the Tryzub became the official coat of arms of Ukraine. It is a symbol of unity, strength and steadfastness of Ukrainians, which history goes back to The Times of Kyivan Rus.

For the first time, the Tryzub appeared in the tenth century on coins and royal seals as a sign of the power of the Rurik dynasty. It was a symbol of Volodymyr the Great – on coins it was depicted next to the image of the Prince.

In 1918, during the time of the Ukrainian People's Republic, the tryzub was chosen as the state coat of arms, emphasizing its continuity with previous periods of Ukrainian history.

In Soviet times, the tryzub was banned. But after the restoration of independence in 1991, it again became one of the main symbols of Ukraine. On February 19, 1992, the Verkhovna Rada approved the Tryzub as a small state coat of arms, securing its place in the national symbols.

With the beginning of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, the Tryzub has acquired a new meaning: it unites Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine around the world, serving as a symbol of the struggle for freedom, independence, truth and justice.
